How long does it take to fix posture?

Bad posture is not easily remedied. Posture takes a long time to fix, but it is possible. You need to look for good ways to treat in case of a lopsided posture or a less-than-perfect posture.

It’s important to start working on poor posture early to correct it in the safest, most effective way. It causes strain to activation of your muscle memory in the shoulder, neck, abdomen, and even spine. It can also be the change of weight, pregnancy, and even stress-related habits.

You would want your muscle memory to get activated through your routine, especially through your core muscles and abdominal muscles. If you want a correct posture, you should keep your posture in check.

Here are some of the causes of poor posture:

Sitting in the same position for too long

Bad habits such as sitting in the same position for too long can cause poor posture as if you’re at a 90-degree angle. This can cause your muscles to become weak and your spine to become less flexible.

Looking down at a phone or computer screen

Every day, people tend to look down at their phone or any other object for over two hours at a time. This position literally causes our necks and backs to go out of alignment.

When we are staring down, the strain is higher on our spine and can cause nerve damage which stresses the muscles preventing them from reaching their full potential, leading to loss of flexibility in your neck and spine.

Lack of exercise

Bad posture is often the result of habits that have developed over time. One of these habits is a lack of exercise. When you don’t get enough exercise, your muscles become weak and your spine becomes less flexible.

In fact, one of the most common posture pitfalls is not exercising enough. This can cause strain on muscles around your body such as postural muscles, hamstring muscles, glute muscles, and leg muscles due to little-to-no activity.

Poor sleeping habits

You may not realize it, but your posture and the way you sleep have a lot to do with each other.

Bad sleeping habits can also lead to bad posture. If you’re sleeping on your stomach, for example, you’re putting added stress on your neck. And if you’re sleeping on your side, you may be putting too much strain on your spine.

Weight gain or loss

When you gain weight, your body becomes less flexible and your muscles become weaker. Bad posture can also often be the result of weight loss and when you lose weight, your body becomes less flexible and your muscles become weaker.

If you’re not getting enough exercise, this can cause you to lose muscle mass and lead to poor posture. Weight gain can also lead to bad posture as the added weight can put stress on your spine.

Lifting heavy objects without proper form

Poor posture forces you to burden your muscles, therefore causing unwanted injuries. When you lift a weight, your body should be in a straight line from your head to your heels. If you lift the weight using the incorrect form, you may bend at the waist or twist your back.

When you lift a weight, make sure you use proper form and gain core muscle strength. Lift the weight using your legs, not your back as this can cause injury to your abdominal muscle and hip muscle. Make sure you keep your back straight and don’t bend at the waist.

Age

Age is a factor in poor posture. When you get older, your body becomes less flexible and your muscles become weaker which can lead to bad posture. It can be hard to have proper posture as you age and can even cause posture mistakes because of your bones weakening.

How to avoid poor posture

Good posture is a very important issue for many people. You might have been dealing with poor posture since childhood or you could be feeling the effects of an unhealthy desk job.

Here’s a list of posture-correcting activities and remedies to help you:

Stretching

Surprisingly, stretching can actually help you keep a good posture!

Stretching keeps your joints flexible and prevents them from becoming stiff over time which often leads to bad posture.

You can have health troubles and can have terrible posture as you grow older, so stretching can help correct it. Do stretches such all full-body stretches, hip stretches, and chest-opening stretches. Target your hamstring muscles, thigh muscles, upper back muscles, and rhomboid muscles. Don’t forget to keep your stretch sequence so you won’t stretch too much and always do a posture check after!

Exercise regularly

If you’re not getting enough exercise, start by adding a few minutes of exercise to your day. Exercise regularly to keep your muscles strong and your spine flexible. This will help improve your posture and prevent poor posture from developing in the future.

To correct your posture, do exercises with posture awareness regularly so that you can maintain a healthy posture. If you’re lifting weights, lift with the right spinal posture as this can cause nerve damage due to compression if not done right.

Follow a healthy diet

When you gain weight, your body becomes less flexible and your muscles become weaker. If you lose weight, your body becomes less flexible and your muscles become weaker.

Whether you are trying to gain or lose weight, make sure you’re doing it in a healthy way so that your muscles won’t suffer as you get back into proper shape.

Sleep on your back or side

Sleeping on your back promotes good posture by strengthening the muscles in your neck and upper spine while also reducing pressure on these areas. Keeping a pillow underneath your knees can help keep your spine alligned while sleeping on your back. Sleeping on your side will provide more stability for the lower spine because it aligns with the natural curves of this area better. Side-sleepers can benefit with a pillow in-between their legs to help keep their pelvis and hips alligned. This allows them to have less pressure on their hips and low back.

If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort when sleeping, try alternating between sleeping positions to give each region a break from time to time.

Avoid sitting for long periods of time

Sitting for long periods of time can be bad for your posture. When you sit, your back becomes rounded and your shoulders slump forward. This can cause pain in the neck, back, and shoulders.

If you have to sit for long periods of time, make sure you take regular breaks to move around and stretch. You need to keep your body in a neutral position to correct posture and If possible, try to get up and walk around every hour or so.

See a specialist—like a chiropractor!

If you’ve been struggling with poor posture for a long time and it gets serious, skip the quick posture fixes you see online or a smart posture trainer and look for a specialist that can help your postural muscles the best way.

A chiropractor can help locate the root of the problem and provide treatment that will help improve your posture. Chiropractors can help identify muscle spasms, muscle strain, muscle tightness so that you can find the right posture fix.
